How to Use Video

Video content on the internet continues to expand in popularity and many experts forecast that this type of content will continue to surge overthe next few years due the growing availability of video recording devices for the broad audience. While creating your video content you should remember several important things:

  • The perfect duration of the any video is about 90-120 seconds. Video content beyond 120 seconds is less likely to be viewed.
  • If your content requires more time then consider creating an intro video of 90 – 120 seconds and divide the rest of your content into separate video clips. If necessary, provide a menu with links to these logical parts somewhere next to your initial intro video
  • Consider different ways to present video content beyond the talking head scenario:

Here's some ideas about how to present your video:

  • Use an interview format with an on or off camera interviewer to move beyond the talking head scenario.
  • Use still images to convey important information. Intersperse these images between video segments with the voice track continuing over the stills.
  • Use of music to enhance the viewers experience and create an emotional connection.
  • Use on screen text that conveys important information such as the identity of a person or the location, etc.
  • Pay attention to body language. For example, is it better to have the person standing or sitting, leaning on a desk or sitting in a chair? Or should it be close up?
  • Pay attention to the background. For example, is it better to record the presentation indoors or outdoors? How can the background enhance the message? What is the lighting like in your preferred background? Does it need enhancing?
  • Pay attention to colour schemes. Is a particular colour scheme required in order to reflect branding? Do the background colours compliment the colours used in the presenter’s attire?
